In June 1998, the Mayor and City Council approved amendments to the Jonestown
Urban Renewal Area giving BDC – acting for the City -- authority to buy
70 vacant or underutilized properties in the 800, 900, 1000, and 1100 blocks
of Fayette Street. Many of the buildings within the project area were abandoned
or deteriorated. With multiple owners and poorly configured parcels, redevelopment
would occur absent a broader revitalization strategy. The Fayette Street corridor
from downtown and Interstate-83 provides a natural gateway to The Johns Hopkins
Medical Institutions campus. The redevelopment of the project area has strengthened
the linkages between Hopkins, a major East Baltimore employment center and
downtown. Businesses such as Bank One and Chesapeake Advertising have provided
employment opportunities for nearby residents of Jonestown and Pleasant View
Gardens.
