Washington Village/Pigtown is one of Baltimore’s eight designated Main
Street districts. The Washington Village/Pigtown Main Street has achieved numerous
accomplishments: opening of several new businesses, including Evelyn’s
Café, the successful annual “running of the pigs” festival,
and new pedestrian street lights. Building on the rising housing values and the
success of Camden Crossing, opportunities will be created for the redevelopment
of current blighted or underutilized structures. Amending the Urban Renewal Ordinance,
which was completed in 2004, in Washington Village to obtain condemnation authority,
was the next critical step in the economic and community development activity
along the corridor. The acquisition parcels were chosen based on several factors
including chronic code enforcement problems, status of importance along the commercial
corridor and redevelopment capacity. Most of the properties are in clusters in
the 700 & 900 blocks of Washington Blvd. This clustering of properties
allowed the BDC to recently select two development teams who will build mixed
use products on these sites.
This effort is being led by the Commercial Revitalization team. For more

program.
