Military History: The Bicentennial of the War of 1812 is a reminder of the important role that Baltimore played in defeating the British Navy on September 12, 1814. After the British had come and set fire to the White House in Washington DC, they decided to come to Baltimore for what they thought would be an easy fight. The British were met with an unexpectedly fierce militia of Baltimoreans who were able to quell the British invasion at Fort McHenry. It was at Fort McHenry where Francis Scott Key wrote the famous words to the Star Spangled Banner.

In addition, at the top of Patterson Park (then called Hamspead Hill), the British troops, which had amassed forces at North Point, saw the cannons and weaponry that awaited them and turned around. The British returned to their ships and sailed away.

Fort McHenry National Monument and Shrine, Patterson Park, and the Star Spangled Banner Museum and Flag House will all be participating in 2012’s bicentennial events.
