BDC Awards Wicomico Street Property to WM. T. Burnett & Co./STX, LLC
Baltimore, MD (June 28, 2011) – As a result of the recent Request for Proposals (RFP) process, the Baltimore Development Corporation (BDC) today announced that, on behalf of the City of Baltimore, it is awarding 1448-1458 Wicomico Street to Wm. T. Burnett & Co./STX, LLC for redevelopment and will enter into an Exclusive Negotiating Privilege (ENP) with the company.
Wm. T. Burnett & Co., a Baltimore City-based, locally-owned and operated company since its inception in 1885, is a leading manufacturer of polyurethane foam and nonwoven materials produced at plants in Jessup, Maryland; Statesville, North Carolina; and Phoenix, Arizona. The company is now in its third generation of ownership. STX, a Wm. T. Burnett & Co. subsidiary that specializes in sporting goods and apparel manufacturing that has been in business since 1970, is a significant player in the sports equipment market. The combined Wm. T. Burnett/STX operations employ over 400 workers; the majority of whom live in Maryland, with over 60 employees in Baltimore City, managing and supporting all the other company locations and operations across the country.
Wm. T. Burnett/STX, which is headquartered in the Carroll Camden Industrial Park in Southwest Baltimore at 1500 Bush Street, also occupies a warehouse building (across the street) at 1455 West Hamburg Street, which immediately abuts the 1448-1458 Wicomico Street property. The companies plan to utilize the Wicomico Street site to expand its warehouse facilities made necessary by the continued growth of its research and development operations during the last year.
“We are pleased that this decision will retain one of Baltimore’s oldest and most successful businesses in the City,” said BDC President M. J. “Jay” Brodie. “Assisting existing companies such as Wm. T. Burnett/STX to expand and position itself for future growth is the core of BDC’s mission.”
The Wm. T. Burnett/STX development team is expected to include: E.H. Worthington Co. – general contractor; SMG Architects, Inc. – architect; and Alfred Berry, AB Associates – real estate consultant.
The Carroll Camden Industrial Park forms the southern gateway entrance to the City and downtown Baltimore. The area encompasses 500 acres and is home to over 120 businesses, employing more than 6,500 people. The area is well served by Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus lines and has immediate access to Interstates 95 and 295. Approximately 10 minutes from downtown Baltimore by car, and 35 minutes from Washington, D.C. by MARC train, the neighborhood offers excellent regional connectivity.
