Baltimore, MD (October 18, 2011) – On behalf of the City of Baltimore, the Baltimore Development Corporation (BDC) has facilitated the sale of the Inn at Government House with recent Board of Estimates approval of a Land Disposition Agreement and a Purchase Money Mortgage.

Located at 1125 North Calvert Street in the Mount Vernon community, the Inn at Government House, a City-owned brownstone mansion constructed in 1890, is being sold for $725,000 to Mount Vernon Mansion, LLC (a partnership of Eddie Brown of Brown Capital Management and Martin Azola).  The development team will rehabilitate the property as a historic 17-room boutique–style bed and breakfast with ancillary restaurant and event space.

“For sometime, the City has sought to identify a viable reuse for this property,” said BDC President M.J. “Jay” Brodie.  “We are confident that this experienced development team will rehabilitate these buildings, creating a fine asset in the heart of the Mount Vernon community.”

The Inn at Government House, last improved in 1985, consists of three structures, including a four-story historic mansion and two adjoining federal-style row houses with parking.  During its lifetime the facility has served as a private residence for William Painter (inventor of the bottle cap); the first headquarters for the City’s Department of Recreation and Parks; and more recently, the official guest house of Baltimore City.

BDC issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the purchase, lease or operation of the Inn at Government House.  Mount Vernon Mansion, LLC was the only respondent.  The property was declared surplus by the City’s Space Utilization Committee, and the City Council approved a sales ordinance granting disposition.
